Facial Expression Recognition for neuroscience

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is crucial in social communication and in various applied fields, such as social robots, healthcare, and driver fatigue surveillance. Central to FER are Action Units (AUs) and the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which provide a systematic approach to categorize facial movements. However, AUs are unable to fully capture the subtleties of micro-expressions, which are critical in contexts like security and psychological assessments.
This project explores new facial expression markers for pain assessment, emotional monitoring, and mental health conditions detection in patients during psychotherapy sessions
